FILM FORUM: August 16, 2017

Join us Wednesday, August 16, at 3:00 PM as we return to the very dark side for the second part of our vampire trilogy, Nosferatu, the Vampyre, filmed in 1979 by German filmmaker, Werner Herzog. He wanted to honor the 1922 classic film by F. W. Murnau, the first attempt to film Dracula, though without permission of the Bram Stoker estate. This time around, legal issues were resolved so that Herzog, one of Europe’s great directors, could cast some of the great actors working in the 70s and make a new classic.

He elected to use a wide screen, color, the same design concept for the vampire, and a music score that incorporates both modern music by Popal Vuh, Wagner’s prelude to Das Rheingold, Gounod’s “Sanctus” from his Messe solennelle a Sainte Cecile and folk song Tsintskaro. The cast features Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani and Bruno Ganz. Though filmed on a low budget with a very small crew, you’ll be amazed at the artistry and the emphasis on Dracula’s weary, lonely existence…and the really unexpected twist at the end! We’ll be watching the superior German language version.
